The History of Women’s Clothing

Posted on September 13, 2023

Women’s clothing includes all the clothing that women wear, including undergarments. It is a large and diverse category, with many different styles and categories of clothing. Many women’s clothes are designed to flatter the figure and are therefore often considered more “feminine” than men’s clothing.

The women’s clothing industry is a very large one, with gross margins typically around 45% and a high turnover rate. This makes it important for business owners to focus on employee retention, as a high turnover can be costly and time consuming to the company. In the 16th century, women wore a linen garment called a shift or chemise and a wool dress over it. The sleeves were held on with lace. Women could also add a cap, which covered their dirty or lice-infested hair and kept it off their face. Some caps were made of silk or other expensive materials, while others were of coarse or cheap material. In the 18th and 19th centuries, petticoats and dresses were made of cotton or linen. They were usually long, reaching to the ankles or beyond. In addition to being stylish, these garments were practical as they allowed women to work in hot and dusty environments without exposing their arms or backs to the elements. In the colder months, some women wore woolen capes. Scarlet was a fashionable color for these hooded capes and may have been the inspiration for the Little Red Riding Hood story.
