KOKOMO — Kokomo is known as the City of Firsts, and it’ll soon add another first to its list: the state’s first electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant. The 2.4 million-square-foot facility will be built in the city’s industrial park by Samsung SDI and Stellantis under the joint venture Star Plus Energy. It will employ about 1,400 people.
Dukes said the company chose Kokomo for its workforce and land capacity, tax breaks, and its location. It will provide a big boost to local housing, education and transportation, he added.
The facility will produce lithium-ion batteries. It is expected to open in 2025. Star Plus Energy will hire process engineers to develop and optimize the EV battery production process for safety, quality, productivity and sustainability.
They’ll monitor and analyze the current processes, procedures and equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and to recommend new or improved methods. They’ll also work closely with the QA team to develop, monitor and implement new processes and procedures. This is a leadership role that requires excellent project management skills and experience with manufacturing processes and systems.
